I welcome my painting community to my retreat on the elegant Côte d’Azur which is still warm and sunny at this time of year. This is Picasso country with some amazing painting opportunities.
Before we go I will get you up to speed with 'en plein air' technique on my regular Wednesday Zoom at 2.30pm UK, if you can't make this you can still watch the recording. This is £35 per session.
I plan to take a direct flight to Nice on Wednesday 1st October. My 5 painting mornings will be from Tuesday 2nd to Saturday 6th.
We will all stay at the wonderful Emeraude nestled in the elegant residential area of Juan Les Pins, the base and starting point of my morning ‘en plein air’ painting sessions. You can book your rooms in advance directly through me.
Each day starts with a garden breakfast from 8.30am to 9.30am. Then we’re off for an 'en Plein Air' painting morning followed by the option of lunch at nearby restaurants at these potential locations.
Day. 1 Antibes plus lunch.
Day 2. Mougins plus lunch
Day 3. Biot plus lunch.
Day 4 Bon Port plus lunch.
Day 5 St. Paul de Vence plus lunch.
Some of these locations will be by mini van at an average cost of 30 Euros return.
Between 6.30pm and 7.30pm we meet in the gardens for ‘Rosé Time’ where we review work and talk about the next days painting. As always, non painting partners and friends are always welcome, but will be asked to pay a £40 supplement for drinks.
Michael and Andrew Gray are our friendly and helpful hosts at the Emeraude, the oldest hotel in JLP.
My 5 morning retreat fee is £300 which includes drinks and snacks for ‘Rosé Time’.
Email me if interested, numbers are limited and fill up quickly. No deposit is required, but the retreat fee will need to be paid a few weeks before we set off.
The Emeraude was my first European painting retreat and what a hidden gem! It’s why I keep going back there and I hope you can join me. Frank Walters.
Here is what my students had to say…
“One word will do: “formidable”! As a novice to plein air painting, this week was the very best first time imaginable. Beautiful scenery, perfect weather, chilled rosé - but most of all, Frank and Susan nurtured a wonderful camaraderie. Frank’s comments are always kind and his guidance generous; he makes it look easy (it isn’t!) and does get you to believe you can achieve your goals. And in the Provençal sun, I nearly could!”Anne B.
“Painting Provence was a wonderful, memorable time of being inspired to paint! Warm thanks to Frank and Susan for organising the retreat, including being based at Andrew and Michael’s gem, Hotel Emeraude. Frank was, as always, a great teacher, available to advise, build confidence in everyone and, through his own painting, model techniques to help improvement. Meeting new people and painters in such a relaxed atmosphere, discovering their approaches, was also great! It was fun, the food, friendship and Rosé hour at 6pm, excellent!”Liz D.
“What a week I had in Juan les Pins on Frank's magical watercolour holiday in October '22. Wonderful accommodation in L'Emeraude Residence and perfect hosts, Andrew and Mike, swimming in the azure sea, perfect sunny weather and stunning views to paint. It was so good to meet and get to know such a lovely bunch of artists of all "levels" and to learn many new (to me) skills from master artist, Frank. An absolutely perfect escape!” Ann W.
